Feeling the music

Uganda
by Ken Ogasawara

Also, my guitar playing has brought much joy to the children. When the teachers discovered I played guitar, they did not hesitate to book me for their music classes.

At first, the concept of me teaching Africans music felt a bit strange. After all, what do I know? Does what I know about music even matter?. For Africans it is not what a person knows about music that matters, it is how much a person feels the music that matters. Fortunately, all I had to do was play guitar along with their songs; their songs are all simple and repetitive so it wasn't hard. And they loved it!

As soon as I walked into the class with the guitar they all got exited & happy. As I was playing, I found myself being gradually pushed back against the blackboard by a throng of dancing children... it was good times, let me tell you. And more to come too!
