What is SALT?

Serving and Learning Together (SALT) is a year-long cross-cultural service experience for Christian young adults from the United States and Canada. Participants live with local host families, serving in a variety of assignments with partners in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and Central America and the Middle East.

The placement process starts each January for a term that runs from August to July. Applicants are encouraged to submit applications early, before February 15 for the best placement selection and service consideration in the same year.

The SALT Orientation for the 2012-13 year is from August 9-16, 2012 in Akron, PA. The SALT Re-entry Retreat will be July 20-22, 2013. Participation at both the orientation and the re-entry retreat are required for SALTers.

Single Christian U.S. and Canadian citizens
18 to 27 years old
Actively participating in the life of a Christian church
Committed to non-violent peacemaking
Ready to uphold MCC lifestyle expectations

How much does it cost?

Participants are expected to fund-raise a contribution minimum of $5,000 US/Cdn. before beginning of their SALT term in addition to paying for the pre-service medical, optical and dental exams, inoculation and visa expenses. MCC has defined funds available to supplement the expected SALT contribution minimum for individuals representing diverse constituency with financial need. All applicants are encouraged to engage in active fund-raising in order to develop a wide prayer and support network invested in the service experience.
